Award-winning Makeup Artist and Global Makeup Program Graduate Robby De Mesa is creating his dream career. At only 21, he already embodies the authenticity and representation he once longed to see in the industry. His passion for makeup began in childhood when he would retreat to his room to experiment with makeup, hoping no one would notice. Once his parents recognized his talent and dedication, they became his biggest supporters. Today, his mother helps with his social media content and often joins him as his plus one.
Robby’s artistry is as vibrant as his personality, from his first experiments with bold, full-glam looks to creating flawless, camera-ready results for Film and TV. Inspired by trailblazers like Patrick Starrr and Pat McGrath, Robby celebrates makeup as a medium of empowerment and self-expression. In this candid interview, he shares his insights on overcoming challenges, staying inspired, and navigating a career that bridges creativity, community, and innovation.

What advice would you give to someone who feels like they don’t quite “fit” but still wants to pursue makeup?
As a queer, plus-size, Filipino artist, I often felt underrepresented in this industry. My advice is to embrace your individuality and uniqueness unapologetically. In a crowded field, authenticity is what sets you apart. Don’t wait for representation; create it. Your distinct perspectives and experiences are valuable assets. By embracing who you are, you’ll inspire others to do the same. Your presence will pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse industry.
For artists struggling to get noticed, what practical steps can they take to get their work seen and build connections?
My biggest piece of advice for artists is something I learned from Makeup Director Tracey Payne at Blanche during my time in the Global Makeup program: never put down your makeup brushes. As a makeup artist, it’s essential to always be willing to learn, grow, and improve your craft. Even when bookings or gigs are slow, use that time to push your artistry and creativity. Plan creative shoots, invite friends over for makeup sessions to build your portfolio and social media content, or explore new techniques. By staying active, creative, and visible, you’ll increase your chances of attracting new opportunities and propelling your success. Lastly, remain open to all opportunities. This industry thrives on connections and networking. Embracing every chance that comes your way can lead to valuable relationships and career-defining moments.
“The first thing that interested me in Blanche was the alumni. A lot of the makeup artists that I looked up to are graduates, like Mimi Choi and Timothy Hung. I went to the campus and did a tour…it was like everything I’d dreamed about. I think I knew immediately that Blanche was the school I wanted to go to.”

As someone who’s worked on everything from everyday looks to more editorial styles, how do you stay inspired and find new ways to innovate with your makeup artistry?
I find inspiration in almost anything! It is so important to admire and analyze the work of other creatives and makeup artists who inspire you. However, the most amazing artists aren’t only inspired by others but also the world around them and in their everyday lives.
What makeup trends are you most excited about right now?
The transformative power of a full glam look is what initially sparked my passion for makeup. I’m very excited to see the makeup industry shifting back towards that playful and creative approach again. After a couple of years of embracing the natural “Clean Girl Aesthetic,” it’s refreshing to witness people embracing bold, vibrant colours and innovative techniques.
What are some of the go-to products in your kit?
When it comes to creating flawless looks, I rely on a few tried-and-true products. Great makeup starts with great skin, so for skin prep, I love using Embryolisse Cream Concentrate and Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor SPF. These products provide the perfect base for makeup. In terms of makeup essentials, I swear by One Size Full Beat Foundation for its flawless, long-lasting coverage. To set everything in place, I use Ultimate Setting Powder and On Til Dawn Setting Spray. These products ensure my clients’ makeup stays fresh and vibrant throughout the day.

Describe your vision for your ideal career future!
Currently, I’m fortunate to work across various sectors, including Film and TV, personal clients, fashion/editorial, and beauty influencer events. While I enjoy the diversity, I envision myself specializing in the beauty/editorial space and expanding my celebrity clientele. Within the next two years, I plan to solidify my presence in the industry further by establishing myself in Los Angeles full-time.
Additionally, I’d love to bridge the gap between professional makeup artistry and beauty content creation. Rather than seeing these roles as mutually exclusive, I believe there’s an opportunity to blend them. I also aspire to create engaging beauty content while maintaining my credentials as a professional makeup artist. By doing so, I hope to inspire a new generation of artists and challenge the conventional divide between industry professionals and influencers.
How do you feel about the impact of AI on opportunities for makeup artists in Film & TV, and what do you think it means for the future of our industry?
I see AI as a catalyst for creativity in the makeup industry. AI-generated looks and concepts have personally inspired me, sparking challenges to recreate them practically. This fusion of technology and art enables me to push boundaries and redefine what makeup can be. I have also seen some artists using AI to help envision certain characters and what their makeup designs could potentially look like.

“I never envisioned a career in Film and Television. However, when I volunteered on set, I seized the opportunity and said yes. That decision led me to become a full-time, award-winning TV/Film makeup artist.”

You’re officially an award-winning Film & TV makeup artist, with several current and upcoming projects! How did you get into it and how is it going?
Ironically, I never considered Film and TV as a career path after graduating from Blanche. However, a single opportunity to work on set changed everything. I said yes, and that decision sparked a chain reaction of connections and collaborations. On set, I met incredibly talented creatives who helped build my network and reputation. Assisting other makeup artists further honed my skills. I’m grateful for their guidance and support, which have been instrumental in my success. I quickly fell in love with the fast-paced, creative environment. The experiences and doors opened through this medium have been invaluable. I’ve learned to embrace unexpected opportunities, and I’m thrilled to see where this path continues to take me.
