In honour of International Women's Day we're taking a look at a few of the many incredible women that started their journeys at Blanche Macdonald. From freelancers to salon and brand owners, the Blanche community has no shortage of brilliant and inspiring women.
At our 2020 Graduate Fashion Show, Sugar on the Side, 24 Fashion graduates sweetened up the runway with their immaculately crafted debut collections. The evening was filled with spectacularly chic moments, culminating with awards and the announcement of three Fashion Design graduates who will be representing Blanche Macdonald as Emerging Talent Designers at Vancouver Fashion Week.
Fashion Design alum Peter Zuk is brimming with energy, exuberance and off-colour one-liners. Peter is the living embodiment of what it means to be over-the-top. And you better believe that he bring his outrageous personality to the runway too. Renowned for his wild design sense and theatrical productions, Peter and his label Haus Zuk have quickly gained an enthusiastic following. His label has walked at international fashion weeks, you can find his work featured in Paper Magazine, and his designs have been seen on famed drag icons, like The Vixen. A self-described "liability", we guarantee that you've never seen a designer like Peter before.
Growing up in Victoria, BC, a life in high fashion once seemed like an impossible dream for Emily Buhr. But today she's cemented her place at a legendary fashion house. Emily is the first person to see the new items coming in as the Vancouver boutique's Stock Coordinator. Now her days are filled with back or house coordination and—of course—haute fashion.
Perfectly suited for a future Fashion Stylist and Costumer for TV and film, Derek Perrett's story seems like something straight from a movie. Small town boy in Alberta packs his bags and moves to the big city to follow his dreams of a life in fashion. Now that he's added photoshoots with stars like Keiynan Lonsdale, Tati Gabrielle and Riley Smith and on set experience on shows like iZombie and The Flash to his resume, it's clear that this move was just what Derek needed.
After graduating from Blanche Macdonald, Jordan was eager to get her career started in Vancouver's fashion industry. Led by a desire to gain experience, Jordan got a job with Vancouver-based menswear company Indochino as a Customer Service rep. Five years later, Jordan has worked up the ranks and is their Marketing and Social Media Coordinator setting the pace for the brand on social channels and coordinating influencer deals!
Theola Wong's foray into Fashion Design has been a resounding success. With a love for clothing that began early in childhood coupled with the skills she mastered in Blanche Macdonald's Fashion design program, Theola has taken on challenging but rewarding roles at activewear brands like Nike, Adidas, and Reebok. Now she's taking her career into her own hands as a Freelance Creative Director.
Kate Wotherspoon left Alberta in pursuit of the metropolitan setting of Vancouver and the classrooms of Blanche Macdonald. It wasn't long before she felt the pull of the international fashion scene that has led her to London. Making the move across the pond has proven to be a stellar career move for Kate. Since touching down in London she’s landed positions at Chloé, Saint Laurent, British Vogue, and most recently, More or Less Magazine. Next on her list, carving out her place as an Art Director!
With experience designing for some of the city's most coveted brands, Cristin Heck's immense talent has landed her a leading position at Arc'teryx. Now she's tasked with overseeing design operations for one of Vancouver's most beloved outdoor brands.
